Modern Days' Holmes: A High-functioning Sociopath


There are very few people who haven't heard of Sherlock Holmes. Creation of Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is renowned for his abilities in observation, deduction, forensic science and logical reasoning that verge on the extraordinary. He uses these exceptional skills to solve crimes in the 1900s' London with his dear friend and roommate, Dr. Watson.

Numerous adaptions of classic books, movies and TV series that feature the world's only consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes and one of them is Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' ❝Sherlock❞.


Based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, modern day “Sherlock” is a high-functioning sociopath with no social grace whatsoever who solves crime in contemporary London with the help of 21st century technology, computers, smartphones and Google searches, side by side his friend Dr. Watson, the veteran. 



One of the highlights of this adaptation is it's exploration deeper into the character of Sherlock than Doyle's original stories. The character, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is portrayed as nuanced and complicated, both illustrating his highs and lows. Sherlock is portrayed as a genius, but his brilliance is frequently seen to have a dark side. He often finds it challenging to establish relationships because of his intelligence, which causes him to feel isolated from the rest of society.

Further, Sherlock's character is explored in interesting ways, with his portrayal of addiction standing out. The authors of the series took the liberty to elaborate on the references to Sherlock's drug usage that Doyle made in his novels, illuminating the underlying psychological problems that caused the character to become addicted. by doing so, it humanized the character in a way that makes him both approachable and engaging, demonstrating that even a genius must battle their demons.


The modern approach also allows the show to address themes and plots that are relevant to today's world. From issues of cyber-terrorism to addiction, the series is able to spin modern day challenges into its storylines without betraying its core story. 



In conclusion, this modern day depiction by Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock breathed new life into the classic character, bringing a fresh and contemporary perspective to him that most know and love. This adaptation revives and renews Doyle's classic story brilliantly by presenting Sherlock as a complex character with many sides who confronts contemporary issues on a regular basis while wrestling his own inner demons, making it a standout success for fans of the book readers and non-readers alike.
