The owner of the Titanic is a British shipping company called White Star Line. This was a renowned shipping company at that time. Titanic was the second ship of the "Olympic Class Ocean Liner". These liners were the center of public interest because of their size and luxury. In the late 19th-century shipping company were fast and faster ships. The faster the ships, the more popular they were. Even there was an award called Blue Riband depending on the record highest average speed of the passenger liners crossing the Atlantic Ocean in regular service. This record was based on the average speed, not the passage time because ships used to follow different routes. England-based shipping companies were dominating Europe to America route. There was a blusterous competition between the UK and Germany in the
construction of ocean liners.
In the late 19th century two german companies named The Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL or North German Lloyd) and HAPAG were making fast and faster ships. The Norddeutscher Lloyd built a ship called The SS Kaiser Wilhem der Gross which entered service in 1897. This ship had four funnels so it could run faster than other ships of that time. Not only the speed but also it was much popular among the people because of its size, strength, and luxury. This started a new epoch in ocean travel. It won the heart of the people and also the Blue Riband for Germany. NDL’s rival company HAPAG launched SS Deutschland and another four funneled ship to compete with them. And it was successful and robbed Blue Riband from SS Kaiser Wilham der Gross by achieving the award in just five days of crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Later NDL’s SS Kaiser Willhem ll, Cunard Line’s Lusitania, and Mauretania occupied that award for a long time. RMS Mauretania kept it to her from 1907 to 1924. It’s a huge time! Both Lusitania and Mauretania had a nickname which is “ greyhounds of the seas.”
